Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

What is FES?

Footdrop – difficulty lifting the foot up at the ankle when swinging the leg forward – is a common and often early cause of walking difficulties in people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a non-invasive technique that can help people with footdrop walk more easily.

Using electrical impulses at just the right time during the gait cycle, FES stimulates the muscles that lift the foot. It can lead to significant improvements in posture, gait and balance and can also reduce fatigue levels and muscle pain.

MS Research's role

We no longer provide an FES clinic, but we can offer advice on FES. Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you want to know more.
